Graduate Student Support

Graduate student research is an essential part of ALSiNG. GSRs across the disciplines will have the opportunity to collaborate on studies that promote inclusive learning.

Now Open: Call for Applications for Spring 2020
Deadline: January 16, 5:00 PM PST
Info Session: January 10, 2020 12:30 - 1:30 PM Social Science 2 Room 233

Call details:

ALSiNG is a UCSC Learning Community that brings together faculty and Ph.D. students from across campus to spark interdisciplinary insights and innovations in research central to inclusive learning. The central mission of ALSiNG is to conduct research focused on these two topics:

  1. The strengths that children and students from historically underserved backgrounds bring to learning environments from their homes and communities (both local and digital), and
  2. The practices that foster their learning, in instructional settings and design, technologies for learning, and institutional practices (e.g. positive campus climate and sense of belonging).

As part of this learning community, PhD students will expand their own research skills and perspectives, receive mentorship from faculty, and contribute to current discussions on education, learning, and equity.

Accepted Students’ Responsibilities/Expectations:

  • Accepted students are expected to continue as members of the learning community for both Spring and Summer (although the funding is just for one quarter).
  • Students who are interested in joining the learning community but do not need funding are also welcome to apply.
  • Accepted students will be expected to attend monthly meetings (3 per quarter).
  • Accepted students will also be expected to attend monthly student-led workshop meetings (3 per quarter).
  • Accepted students will help write a white paper on a topic related to the shared research interests of the group and/or design a study to address the major goals of the Learning Community.
  • Accepted students will write a progress report that summarizes completed and planned research activities.

Funding

Students receiving funding will have a GSR appointment that covers Spring 2020 with a standard 50% time, which includes fee remission and GSHIP health insurance. GSR salary is determined at the divisional level and is therefore dependent upon the GSR’s home department and year in the program. Non-resident tuition is not covered.
